To enjoy your fresh-cut bouquet for as long as possible, start by trimming about one inch off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle — this helps the flowers drink more easily. Place them in a clean vase filled with cool water and stir in the packet of flower food that comes with your arrangement. Every two to three days, empty the vase, rinse it out, refill it with fresh water and food, and give the stems another quick trim. Remove any leaves that sit below the waterline, since submerged foliage breaks down and speeds up bacteria growth. Keep your bouquet in a cool spot out of direct sunlight, and away from heating vents, appliances, and bowls of ripening fruit, which release gases that cause flowers to fade faster. With this simple routine, most fresh-cut bouquets stay beautiful for five to seven days, and often longer.
